Familya — Support

Something not working, or not making sense? Write to support@familya.app. We answer in English, slovenščina, hrvatski and Deutsch, usually within two working days.
When you write, it helps if you include: your app version (Settings → About), your phone and OS version, and what you expected to happen instead.
Frequently asked
How do invite codes work?
One adult creates the family; everyone else joins with a code.
- In the family, go to Family settings → Invite someone.
- Choose the role the new member joins as (Admin, Parent, Child or Other), how many people may use the code, and how long it stays valid.
- Share the code. It looks like
XKTP-9RWM— nine characters with the dash, from an alphabet with no I, O, 0 or 1 so it can’t be misread.
The person you invited either enters it at Join with a code on the welcome screen, or types it into the Invite code field while creating their account — that joins them in one step.
Codes can expire, run out of uses, or be revoked by an Admin. If a code stops working, ask for a new one. Only share a code with someone you genuinely want in the family: whoever holds it can see everything the family shares.

Admin and Parent are the “managers”. Every one of these rules is enforced on the server — the app only hides what the server would refuse anyway.
Why can’t my child create a shopping list?
Because creating and deleting lists is a manager action, and a Child account isn’t a manager. Children can still do the useful part: add items to any list, tick things off in the shop, and clear what’s been bought.
If you want a child to be able to create lists too, an Admin can change their role to Parent in Family settings → Members. The same logic applies elsewhere: a Child can set a reminder or a schedule for themselves, but not for somebody else.
How do penalties work, and why is a balance negative?
A chore done badly can cost coins rather than pay them. A Parent or Admin taps Penalise on the chore, enters an amount, and that amount is deducted with a note.
A penalty is the one thing in Familya that may take a balance below zero. That is deliberate — a debt should be visible rather than silently rounded up to nothing.
Two rules keep it fair:
- A member with a negative balance can still earn. Approved chores pay in as normal and bring the balance back up.
- Nobody can spend past zero. Redeeming a reward is refused if it would overdraw, so a negative balance can never get worse by spending.
The same occurrence can only be penalised once, and a penalty can be reversed: Undo penalty credits back exactly what was taken and puts the chore back to “to do”. Every change — earning, spending, penalties, reversals, manual adjustments by a parent — is listed in the wallet with its reason, so any balance can be explained.
Where are chat photos stored, and who can see them?
Photos you send in the family chat are uploaded to our server, which checks that the file really is an image (a renamed file is rejected), makes a small thumbnail, and stores both in a private bucket. There is no public link: every download is streamed back through the API only after checking that you are a member of the family the photo belongs to.
So a photo is visible to the members of that family and nobody else. Deleting the message deletes the photo from storage. Deleting the family deletes all of them.
If your family runs its own server with object storage switched off, the chat still works — it just becomes text only, and the app tells you so.
How do I delete my data?
Delete a family.
An Admin can do this in Family settings → Danger zone → Delete
family. It is immediate and permanent, for every member: lists, events, notes, reminders,
chores, the whole coin ledger, rewards, chat messages, photos, polls and schedules.
Leave a family. Family settings → Leave family. You lose access to what the family shares; the family keeps it.
Delete your account. Email support@familya.app from the address on your account and ask. We verify it’s you, then erase your user record, your private content, your devices and sessions, and remove you from every family. If you’re the last Admin somewhere, we’ll check with you first. Done within 30 days, confirmed by email.
Clear your location trail. Settings → Location sharing lets you switch sharing off and clear the history you’ve already recorded. It also expires by itself after 7 days.

Other things people ask
Is it free? Are there ads? Yes, free. No ads, no in-app purchases, no subscription, no third-party analytics.
Can I be in more than one family? Yes — a household, a shared flat, grandparents — and you can carry a different role in each. Switch between them from the family switcher at the top of the app.
I turned location sharing on but nobody sees me. Check that the OS location permission is granted (Settings → Location sharing → Open settings) and that the in-app switch is on. Both are needed. Members who have not turned sharing on simply don’t appear on the map — that’s not a bug.
Notifications aren’t arriving. Turn them on in Settings → Notifications and allow them at the OS level. On Android 13 and newer, the notification permission is a separate prompt.
I forgot my password. Write to support@familya.app from your account’s email address.
Can I run Familya on my own server? Yes. The backend is open and self-hostable. Point the app at your own instance and none of your family’s data touches our servers.
